Hi there, I got the offer from both Mcgill and University of Alberta for material engineering(major in nanotech). I am in a dilemma as to whether to choose McGill or Alberta for my undergraduate studies as McGill ranks higher than Alberta but Alberta is the best for nanotech.

I have some questions:
1.which uni is cheaper in terms of tuition fee and cost of living?
2.which city is better to live and more diverse?(edmonton or montreal)

Please leave comment to advise me!

I was born and raised in Edmonton and went to U of A for mechanical engineering and am now at U of T

1. I'm not too sure, but I would guess Edmonton would have a lower cost of living than Montreal.
2. Montreal is definitely more diverse. I love Toronto but I really miss a lot of things about Edmonton. I had so many fun times in Edmonton. To me where you live is all about who you know. I love Edmonton most because my friends and family live there. If they all lived in Yellowknife I would probably love Yellowknife.

Thanks for your response. I heard my friend say that you will have to learn French if you wanna study, work and stay in montreal. Hmmm,I still cant make a decision yet. Any seniors from McGill can give me some advices?

McGill, and Montreal, is known for being a huge international city. It's very internationally diverse and McGill attracts a lot of students from around the world.

As for cost of living, Montreal has a relavtively low cost. Montreal was actually ranked the best Canadian city for students. I'm not sure what tutition is but it's deffinatly on their website. You don't need to know french to study there, as McGill is an english school, however if you would like to work in Montreal speaking french is deffinatly an asset. Depending on your field and company, it maybe madatory. However, there are always options to move after university and there many not always be jobs in Montreal after you graduate.

You don't have to speak any French at all if you wanna study at McGill, all their classes are in English (except French, lol)
If you wanna work part-time while being a student, I'm pretty sure you need to be bilingual, or at least have working knowledge of French. As for getting a full-time job? I hear that there are some offices/companies where you can get by speaking little to no French, but bilingualism is obviously much more useful.

Also, assuming you're not a Quebec resident, the tuition fee is a little under $6000. Then there's a bunch of other fees and stuff and res for first year, it comes out to around 20-24,000 (according to the McGill website).

So far, the tuition fee for U of A is $24,000 and for McGill, it ranges from $26,000 to $28,000.
As for cost of living, I cant compare between Edmonton and Montreal because the information in each website varies.

Is ranking that important? Because McGill ranked 17th and U of A ranked 100th in the world.

Mcgill is the much better school overall and has the better quality of living. Montreal is an amazing city. Uofa has a really strong engineering program though.

The most important question here is where do you want you want to live? If you want to work in alberta after graduating then there might be some advantage to going to uofa. If you are from say toronto then there might be some advantage in going to mcgill.

Ranking isn't very important for an engineering undergrad degree. U of A still ranks pretty well, I think their humanities and social sciences fields pull them down a bit, engineering is definitely one of their stronger disciplines.

I am going to guess that Edmonton and Montreal will probably be pretty comparable when it comes to cost of living. Edmonton might have cheaper rent, but residence at either will be expensive, just because residence is kind of expensive.

U of A does have NINT. That's a pretty big deal if you want to study nanotechnology. I assume you want to do grad school?

I don't think the cost of living in Montreal would be much higher than in Edmonton. Worth considering though is that decent-paying jobs are easy to come by in Edmonton/Alberta, especially if you're an engineering student. You'll likely be working during the summers, and with such high tuition costs, you will want to make as much money as possible. It's a bonus too if you can get engineering work experience, as that will help when you're looking for jobs after graduation.

Hi. I am a student from NWT, and I use to live in Toronto.
I am in similar dilemma with you. I have gotten offer from University of Alberta general engineering and Waterloo's Honours Civil Engineering.
Both seems to be good school and I really don't care where I live since i've been living close to both cities.
I think Waterloo's a very good choice but I think Alberta would be a low cost city, and plus Waterloo is a very competitive school.
I have one week to decide!
Can anyone give me any advice?
I would go to McGill for sure if i were you because I really like speaking French and would continue to do so, but too bad I was declined?....

From my research, I think Waterloo's engineering is better than U of A but U of A overall ranking is better than Waterloo. And U of A tuition fee is lower I think! As for living expenses, I don't have much information about it but I think Alberta living expenses will be slightly lower and has more job opportunities.

I don't speak french so this is a disadvantage for me as I wanna find a job there, I really wanna go McGill as it is a prestigious university but I believe I can do my master in McGill one day. So I have decided to pursue my study at U of A.

It's up to you. Both universities are equally good, consider the followings to help you to make a decision:
1.Cost(tuition fee, cost of living and etc.)
2.Subject ranking/overall ranking
