Nah, McGill is relatively tame in terms of riots compared to the other schools. There was a bad case of occupying the principal's office for like a week and riot police on campus but meh, c'est la vie! haha... That's perfectly fine! A lot of people prefer a single room. IMO New rez is not too far LOL. It's honestly 10 minutes from campus and it has the best location IMO. It's right in between Campus (10 mins) and St.Laurent (the clubbing street/bar/restuarant that is also 10 mins away). It also has an underground mall attached to it and a bunch of fast food places for late night munchees! RVC is great! I was in new rez but i loved visiting RVC. You also have a higher chance of getting in if you're a girl. RVC also is mostly single rooms. Only down side is that the bed's a little bit small. RVC cafe is one of my faves tho! Have you ever known or heard of students who've flunked out in their first year and immediately gotten readmitted? I'm kind of curious about these things...

Hey, what are your thoughts on McGill engineering? Do you know how easy it is to switch between engineering majors? I originally applied for civil but now I think I want to do mechanicle.

@bethluttenberger 87.3 is cutting it REALLY close.... so tbh I'm not sure. I know for some reason the cut off grades to get into McGill have gradually been increasing almost every year so I don't know if this year will be the year where not even an 87.3 is enough to get in :S You should know soon however and I wish you the best of luck!!! @Karamazov Nah, most people don't really flunk out. Probably like less than 1% flunk out and I've never really heard any of them ever coming back unless there was a very special reason for it. @DJC97 If your gpa is greater than 3.0 after first year, it is relatively easy to switch. Most of the first year engineering courses overlap with all kinds. One of my roommate's was in general engineering first year and then had higher than a 3.0 after and decided to go into Mech. In fact if you do the general engineering program and achieve a 3.0 or higher gpa you can choose any engineering major and your admission will be guaranteed. However, if you want to transfer from other types of engineering(e.g. Mining to Mechanical), then it may be very hard, especially if you want to go to Mechanical, Civil and to a lesser extent Chemical for your second year. That happens because McGill first places the General Engineering students and then consider the other transfer students. McGill Mechanical Engineering Class 2016

Thank you both for this information, but do either of you know how hard it is to get a 3.0 GPA after first year engineering? Do you see alot of students who are able to achieve this? Also, do you know if it is possible to change from civil to general before the semester starts this fall? Thanks

It's not easy to get a 3.0 gpa but not so hard too. It all depends on your effort. Also, courses like physics 1 &2 and Calc 2 will have HUGE curves so as long as you are in the up part of it you will receive a pretty good grade. The down part is that this courses are in general pretty hard, especially physics 1(the final exam was massive and the word is that the class average was around 20/30%). I was in general engineering last year and I think a good amount of GE students got more than 3.0. About transfer to civil to general, you should talk to McGill and see what they can do. But the truth is that all first year engineering students take the same courses: Chem 110,Chem120,Phys 131, Phys 142, Math 133,Math140,Math 141, facc100 and a humanities course of your choice, so you should change only if you are undecided about your major because transfer from it will be easier(if you have a 3.0 or + gpa). How hard is it to keep a GPA above 3.0 at McGill Desautels? If you don't mind me asking, what is your current GPA?

Class average is mandatory to be between 65% - 74.99%. So that ranges anywhere from 2.7 - 3.0 in terms of GPA. Often if the grades are not within the range, it is up to the professor to choose what grade to curve to. I think most of it balances to around an average of a 3.0; therefore as long as you're around average, your GPA will be around there. It's all based on your peers here, so if you can do better than them, you will do better. Also, if you get freshman year (U0), you will get to take a lot of electives which are not curved and thus could potentially work in your favour (or against you depending on the situation). Most people who work hard will be able to get over a 3.0. A lot of people who don't work hard will also be able to get a 3.0. It honestly depends on what you think you need to do well (whether that be a lot of studying or not a lot). Studying always helps though :P haha so I'd suggest that. McGill Management 2014

Hi LampShade
I was just wondering what grades you had on your top 6 (average) that got you into McGill? How many community hours did you have? Where you waitlisted?
What are the chances of getting into the physics program with a 90% average when the cutoffs an 88% ? (hours = 300)

I had a 94 average and was not wait listed. As for community hours... I honestly don't remember but it was a lot less than what you had. If you were 2% above the cutoff.. I'm surprised they haven't yet gotten back to you :S You should call them! If they wait listed you.. then I think you should probably get in if things go well. McGill Management 2014

Hi LampShade Thanks for taking the time to answer questions! I was wondering if you had any notion of whether taking a 200 level course in 3rd year would be a big deal (in terms of potential grad/law schools). I'm in management but want to do an arts minor, and if I don't cover the necessary intro courses for the minor I want in U0, I won't have a chance to take them in U1 because of all the management core (as I understand it). Should I be too concerned about the possibility of taking a 200 course in U2 if necessary? Thanks! McGill Management 2016

Thanks! No big deal. And to be honest, you can take your 200 level courses in u1 as well. You're eligible to take the MGMT Core in U1 but it doesn't mean you have to take them ALL. I know some friends who purposely didn't take all of the core because it can get pretty heavy. Also, if you're not planning to do something that's credit intensive such as a joint honours program, you should be fine! What are you minoring in? McGill Management 2014

Hey LampShade I'm planning on applying to university this year and I am trying to decide between Desautels and Queens Commerce. How would you compare the two programs? Queens commerce is obviously a great program, but how does Mcgill compare, in terms of overall education, recruitman, recognition, etc.. Also why did you choose Desautels over other programs? Applied To:
McGill: Desautels Faculty of Management(Accepted) Queen's Commerce (Waiting) University of Western Ontario: Ivey AEO (Waiting) University of Toronto: Rotman School of Business (Accepted) Laurier Business (Accepted)
