Hey everyone,

I am going to be attending the University of Guelph-Humber for the Early Childhood Program in hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher in the future (to start).

I am going to be commuting the 1 and a half-2 hour bus ride everyday. My "mock" schedule has me having Fridays off, which is a relief. Once I get my license, I can get commuting time down to roughly 30mins-1hr.

My main question is this. I know that living at home has many financial benefits. However, how will I "suffer" socially, not living on rez? I am INCREDIBLY sociable, so I just want to know of any other downsides to living at home.

Besides that, are there any other tips that you guys are willing to give a student living at home his first year. ANYTHING is appreciated! Thank you everyone!

The downside is that you'll be less likely to be able to go out at night with your friends/to an event unless you've planned for it in advance. It's harder to take part in spontaneous plans when you've already left campus for the day and are already at home. But if your friends know that you're commuting, you can try as much as possible to make plans in advance and crash at a friend's place for the night afterwards.

You'll be spending quite a bit of time each day commuting, so I would try and make use of it. Study, complete assignments, catch up on readings, catch up on sleep, etc.

make friends on campus, especially during frosh week. (this will help if you need a place to crash after parties and stuff lol) and go to lots of social events on campus!

I know Queen's has an orientation session for its FYNIRS (First Years Not In Residence). Perhaps Guelph has a similar session? Also, if you join clubs/associations, you should be able to make friends there. Just be friendly to people in general and you'll never know what opportunities may arise :)
