I am personally working full time during the summer and then maybe I'll consider working throughout the school year once my second year rolls around. But I know in my 3rd-6th year I will be doing a lot of work placement (Pharmacy) so who knows what will happen then. Going to university/college is contributing to the economy by keeping local businesses running, and gaining a higher education helps stimulate the economy when it comes to getting (generally) a higher paid job once you graduate.
