  • Walk or ride my bike!!!! And flirt with the neighbour who has a car.
  • Since I only have class four days a week, I share a monthly metropass with my mom and split the cost of the pass. We make a schedule of who will use the pass at what time. Usually, our trips have multiple stops at different places so we save money by not having to pay a new fare because we have to run an errand, meet someone, etc. Also, while my campus may be huge, it saves money and sometimes time to walk from location to location. Plus you get some exercise from doing this too. ;)
  • Bum off of other people who have cars. My excuse is that it is greener, and makes the roads less crowded overall, but the best one is that my company is priceless.
  • When I am travelling to go home I try to carpool or find a rideshare to cut costs and split gas. If that does not work out, it is always cheaper to travel at certain times of the day (middle of the day or overnight) and certain days of the week (Monday - Thursday) so I try to plan accordingly. I purchase tickets early to get a discounted fare.
  • I try to arrange it so I get all of my errands done on the same day, and I go to places close to my home. This way I'm not spending as much money on gas, or in the stores! PLAN AHEAD!
  • I longboard downhill to the nearby skytrain station to get to school, and when I come home from school, I get off the skytrain a station early and longboard downhill again!
  • Canada, especially Edmonton, generally has a lot of snow in the winter time. Our winters are usually very long as well. So in order to save money on transportation during the winter time, I make use of the easily accessible snow by cross country skiing to school. It is not only a good way to save money on fuel, but also an excellent opportunity to exercise during the long winters!
  • Buy an ISIC (International Student Identification Card) - not only does it give you a student discount on train and bus tickets in Canada for those trips home and travel discounts around the world, but you can get you deals on everything from food to entertainment tickets too!
  • In the winter in Ottawa the Canal is open and if I skate the canal instead of driving to school it takes a little longer but saves me a couple litres of gas as I have to go to school everyday!
  • Roller blades are perfect: they are portable, easy to use, and are going to save you so much money! Plus it's a great way to see the sights while getting some exercise!

Information, advice and tips provided as part of the Money Saving Tips Contest are intended for entertainment only and should be taken with one or two somewhat large grains of salt.
