Tips for Potential Grad Students: Plant Biology

By Dave Cass

Let me answer this in a general way first.  If you decide to do graduate work, plan to do enough FORMAL coursework to last you throughout your career.  There will be pressures to "finish up" asap. You should try to resist these.  A graduate program is a great opportunity-privilege to acquire the training you will need for 30 years or more.  In my own field, experimental plant biology, I would try to get as much fundamental chemistry and math as possible.

Dave Cass, Professor Emeritus, Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, and 3M National Teaching Fellow.
