Tips for Potential Graduate Students: Music

By Elizabeth Wells

Make sure that you get your theory and history skills up to scratch.  Almost all programs require an entrance theory and/or history exam, and if you fail this exam you often have to take remedial courses at your own expense, and which don’t count toward your degree.  Also, make sure you get references that are both performance-based and academic.  Most schools want to see demonstrated strength in both areas.
