Why Employers Hire Music Grads

By Elizabeth Wells

Students who study music at the undergraduate level are often in great demand as legal and medical students.  Why?  Because they have a strong work ethic, a desire to succeed, sensitivity to the feelings of other people, skills in collaboration, communication, and networking.  They are capable of responding in the moment, are good ambassadors and “people” persons, and have shown the desire to master a skill to a very high level.  They make excellent administrators and public relations personnel because they are used to developing concensus, collaboration, and often have a flair for public speaking and performance.

Elizabeth Wells, Marjorie Young Bell Conservatory of Music, Mount Allison University, and 3M National Teaching Fellow.
